01ILLAM

Architecture rooted in Kerala, designed for contemporary living.

ILLAM is an architecture and design studio based in Alappuzha, Kerala, creating distinctive homes across Kerala. Our work brings together traditional Kerala architecture, courtyard-based house design and contemporary residential architecture, shaped around climate, context and modern family life.

From traditional Kerala houses and courtyard homes to modern residences, interiors and renovations, every project responds to its place, climate and the people who will live in it.

02Material & climate

Built for rain, heat and light.

Three thousand millimetres of rain a year, a sun almost directly overhead, and humidity that never really leaves. Every decision we make about roof pitch, overhang depth, wall thickness and where an opening sits comes back to those three facts.

Terracotta tile, exposed brick, laterite, lime and local timber — chosen because they behave well in this climate, and because a mason nearby already knows how to work them. Nothing is detailed so tightly that it cannot weather.

A house here should look better in its tenth monsoon than its first.

03Studio

A timeless Kerala living space where traditional architecture, contemporary interiors and lush landscape come together, reflecting ILLAM’s philosophy of designing spaces rooted in Kerala and crafted for modern living.

We design for how life actually happens.

ILLAM approaches architecture as a dialogue between people, place and material. From courtyard houses to interior environments and landscapes, we design spaces that respond to their surroundings while remaining deeply personal to those who inhabit them.

We work slowly at the beginning — walking the site, tracking the sun, listening to how a family actually moves through a morning — so that the built result feels obvious rather than designed.

—Questions

Working with ILLAM, answered.

What does a house cost to build in Kerala?

It depends far more on finish level and site conditions than on the plan shape. A courtyard house does add roof length and internal wall area compared with a compact rectangular one, so budget accordingly at the outset. We give an honest range after the first site visit rather than a number over the phone.

Where do you work?

The studio is in Ambalappuzha and we work across Kerala — current projects are in Alappuzha, Cherthala and Kozhikode, with one in Pondicherry. For sites more than a few hours away we plan fewer, longer site visits rather than frequent short ones.

Can a traditional Kerala house be built on a small plot?

Often, yes — but the courtyard has to shrink honestly rather than be squeezed in as a token. On tight plots we frequently use a single-sided court or a light well that does the same climatic work in less space.

Do you take on renovations of older Kerala homes?

We do, and it is some of the work we care most about. The usual brief is to keep the roof, the timber and the proportions, and to rebuild the services, kitchen and bathrooms to a standard a family actually wants to live with.

How long does a house take?

Design and approvals typically run four to seven months, construction twelve to eighteen. Traditional timber work and tiled roofs add time, because the craftspeople who do it well are usually booked ahead.
